Give a Scrap is a subscription-based food scrap pickup service that is typically provided on a weekly schedule. The food scraps we collect are delivered to 5Heart Earthworm Farm in Birch Run the same day, where they are pre-composted before being fed to thousands of red worms. The worms convert the food scraps into worm castings, a nutrient-rich soil enhancer.
Extending our reach to surrounding communities such as Bay City, Saginaw and Flint, Give A Scrap provides weekly service to households, multifamily living complexes, and businesses looking to reduce their climate impacts, improve local soil, and feel good about doing what’s right for their environment and local economy. Currently, this service accepts vegetative food scraps (such as fruits, veggies, egg shells, coffee grounds, etc.) from residential subscribers.

Whether it's fruit that was forgotten in your fridge, peels and stems from meal prep, grounds from your morning coffee, or leftover eggshells, we collect it all!*

Depending on your level of service, place your cart or bucket on your front porch, doorstep, or somewhere we can otherwise see it to be emptied on your weekly collection day.

That's right! More commonly known as "worm poo", these castings are a nitrogen- and microbiologically-rich soil amendment that can be used in gardens, potted plants, under trees, and more!
*Your level of service will determine the types of food scraps you can place in your container for collection. Currently, residential subscribers may place “vegetative” food scraps (i.e. fruit, veggies, egg shells, coffee grounds, natural tea and coffee filters) in their containers, while business customers can choose from different collection tiers. We are working on opening new service tiers for residents as well – stay tuned for more info!
