Who is Give A Scrap?
Give A Scrap is a local, woman-owned porchside food scrap pickup service run by Iris Waste Diversion Specialists in Birch Run, MI. Upon receiving an Infrastructure Grant from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) in 2021, we opened up our Pilot Food Scrap Collection Program to Bay City residents and began our journey towards becoming the Great Lakes Bay Region’s #1 food scrap pickup crew.
In 2023, our pilot service became Give A Scrap and has been growing ever since!
Our Mission & Vision
What came from the earth should be returned to the earth – those are the words we operate by! Our mission is to divert as many food scraps from the landfill as possible, where they would otherwise be turned into methane – a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to the weakening of our ozone layer. By turning these food scraps into nutrient-rich, natural worm castings at 5Heart Earthworm Farm, they instead become a chemical-free soil amendment that’s perfect for the garden.
Our vision is to continue expanding our services throughout the region and educate others on the sustainable benefits of food scrap diversion! We want to prove that there is an easy solution to food waste and encourage resilient, future-facing models of resource management.

5Heart Earthworm Farm in Birch Run, MI is the destination for all vegetative food scraps picked up through our service – including fruits, veggies, egg shells, juice pulps, coffee grounds and filters, tea leaves and organic tea bags, and more!
Country Oaks Landscape Supplies
Businesses whose service tiers include meats, dairy, compostable service ware, and other non-vegetative food waste will have their pickups taken to Country Oaks in Burton, MI to be composted at a higher heat level to ensure proper breakdown.
